Flame tribute at MCG clash for commando Cameron Baird killed in Afghanistan

THE parents of the last Victorian Digger killed in Afghanistan will extinguish the Anzac flame in an emotional tribute before thousands at the MCG.

Doug and Kaye Baird, the parents of fallen commando Cameron Baird, will attend a Dawn Service in New Zealand before flying to Melbourne to receive the torch at the half-time commemoration ceremony when Collingwood takes on Essendon.

Victoria Cross recipient Daniel Keighran will also play a roll in the moving ceremony, to be televised nationwide.

The Camp Gallipoli Anzac Torch has toured around Australia in recent months to represent the spiritual return of 11,410 Anzacs who made the ultimate sacrifice.

But Mr Baird said it was also about recognising our contemporary veterans who had died, including his son.

“It’s certainly a day we will not forget,” Mr Baird said.

“Standing on the MCG in memory of Cam ... it will probably bring a tear to the eye.’’

Mr and Mrs Baird will also be guests at the Hume Council Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG Memorial Awards.

The inaugural event will be used to recognised and reward young locals for their achievements.

Cpl Baird was the 100th Australian serviceman to receive the Victoria Cross. He was killed during an engagement with insurgents in the Khod Valley in southern Afghanistan in June 2013.
